Amish fireplaces complaint: the only miracle is that anyone buys these fireplaces, buy a space heater for $30 instead
Its still summer but already newspapers like The Courant are carrying full-page ads for the “Amish mantle and miracle invention.”
Folks, it doesn’t take much investigation to discover that these electric stoves are no miracle and that the only miracle is that anyone pays hundreds of dollars for them.
I called Veronica at Heat Surge to see whether the Ohio company’s customer service representatives were as misleading as its advertising is.
Veronica was pleasantly surprising. While not volunteering any information that might contradict what the ad states, she did give me straight answers.
The stove is free, but you pay up to $547 for the fireplace. It does operate for about 9 cents an hour ON THE LOW SETTING.
You can buy the heat unit for $298.
What she didn’t tell you is that the heat unit – 1,500 watts – provides the same amount of “miracle” heat as does a $30 space heater.
Consumer Reports said in a blog last February:
In fact, David Baker, Heat Surge vice president, recently told The New York Times, “If someone would come to me and say, ‘I need a heater and I want to spend as little as possible,’ I would say go to a local big-box store and buy one for $29.99. Our heater represents a fireplace rather than just some space heater.”

I will NEVER buy anything made by the Amish. Why? Because they are one of the biggest puppy mill breeders of puppies and kittens, that make their way to our State, unbeknownst to our residents. These poor animals are raised to breed, breed, breed till the either die or just can’t produce anymore. They are forced to live in filthy small wire cages along with other animals. Most of them, if they live, go to pet shops. I’d rather buy a space heater than to contribute to those barbaric people. They have no respect for those animals lives and I have absolutely NO respect for them.

I am a very trustful person. If I have not thrown the box away I would love to return this item. I can sit directly in front of it at the highest setting, and just barely feel the heat. I must say it is nice eye candy but not worth what I paid for it. My mistake?
Theres nothing like good old fashioned wood heat to warm the bones. I saw one of these in a store the other day; similar to the Amish; and it put out little heat. Maybe good for a very small room; but other than that; I think I would consider something else.
Its a shame that the Amish have to market something like this; when they make beautiful furniture and accessories for your fireplaces as it is.
Love their bedroom suites they make.
I cannot believe how negative some of you people are . This is not a tiny space heater. This is much larger and emits much more heat for a longer period of time. It claims to cover an 18′ by 18′ area on the high setting and it does. My mother in law has one, she does not live in a large house but the entire house is warm within a half hour after turning it on. I am getting one. I live in a small townhouse with ch and a and all of the heat goes straight upstairs. You guys don’t know how awesome these are. Space heaters will bleed you dry. These are totally different, and cost almost nothing to run.
Go Amish, they must live in palaces. For 24.99, you can have the same amount of portable heat.

Sorry, we love our fireplace. We paid 298.00 plus 9.00 for remote and shipping. If I could find something this attractive cheaper,yes I would buy it. But, take a look at electric fireplace prices. They go upward to the thousands. I looked long and hard before we decided on this. We are purchasing another one for our lower level family room. It sets such a nice ambiance. Very realistic.
Lois – I am sorry, but that is nonsense. You can buy the same fireplace at Costco for $169. I have never seen an electric fireplace that sells for thousands of dollars. The Dog.
We have one and you are right. My wife bought it and it seems nice but heat is heat and it was way too expensive. She also bought from the same source their “swamp” cooler which is a water container in front of a box fan setup. This I had it returned, it seemed too expensive and impractical. A good fan does the same thing. Just good marketing without proper evaluation.

Its electric, the Amish don’t use electric or allow themselves to be filmed. It shames me to think I grew up in this area of Ohio and probably know some … involved.
Oh My Dawg, someone has the rock large enough to speak the truth. We need so much change in truth in advertising, i.e., like the consumer laws enacted in the UK.
