“One person died and two others were seriously injured,” Farrell said. “This kind of violence should not be happening anywhere, let alone in a location that holds a liquor license, where the permittee has a special obligation under the law to insure the safety of the public.”
Farrell said his decision to summarily suspend this nightclub’s liquor permit was based on the initial reports from the New Haven Police Department.
New Haven Police indicate that, shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 28th, they responded to a report of a person shot at the Synergy Nightclub. Officers found a 25 year old male lying on the sidewalk outside the club, suffering from multiple injuries. Police located a second victim, a 21 year old male, in the nightclub’s basement, also suffering from multiple injuries; this victim later died from his injuries. A third victim was later identified at a local hospital, also suffering from injuries sustained during an altercation inside Synergy Nightclub. According to police, the nightclub’s basement has an unguarded rear door leading to the Crown Street garage.
“Violence cannot happen within a permitted premise,” Commissioner Farrell stated. “Every liquor permittee should be on notice that they will be held to account for all activity, particularly violence, that happens on their premises,” Farrell said.
“A summary suspension, under which we suspend a liquor permit without a prior hearing, demands a high threshold,” Farrell said. “Public health and safety must clearly be imperiled. Saturday night’s events at Synergy Nightclub have brought us to that threshold, putting the health, safety and welfare of many patrons at risk. Synergy Nightclub will remain closed until we complete our review of this case and reach a final determination.”
Synergy has reopened under the name Crown Street Bar and Grill. As of last weekend with the installation of some cameras and extra security, the same people were allowed to reopen the same club with a different business name and different family member’s name on the liquor permit.
