UnitedHealthCare And Health Net Merger Investigated

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said today his office is investigating the proposed merger of UnitedHealthCare and Health Net on anti-trust grounds.

“We are investigating the UnitedHealthcare-Health Net merger under our separate antitrust authority to determine whether this combination will have anticompetitive consequences for Connecticut consumers in violation of state antitrust law,” Blumenthal said in a prepared statement.

“One of our concerns is whether the merger will cause excessive concentration in some segments of the health insurance market and thereby unlawfully restrain competition. We have reached no conclusion in our investigation, which is separate and distinct from the Department of Insurance legal responsibilities.

“We have taken steps to obtain additional information, including a meeting with representatives of the companies.”
