Cut Out Cable, Watch TV On Computer

Only recently have I realized that I watch more TV shows on my computer than on my television set. There are enough free sites out there that bring my favorite shows to my house whenever I want, without that $140 bill Comcast charges. I even get free Dexter shows on Showtime on the Web, my favorite.

That said, I’ve been reluctant, almost scared to cut my cord to Comcast. That is, until this great story in the New York Times. I’m going to make that call and follow the path outlined here to wirelessly hook up all of my TVs (all one of them) to my computer.

Check it out here.

  1. Alot of bloggers are not too pleased with the new iPad.There was just too much hype regarding it and lots of blogers got disapointed.Thing is, I can actually see some of the awesome potential of this gizmo. Third-party soft for working with tunes, games, papers and magazine and books, tons of neat stuff, but IMHO they failed to sell it right (excluding the books). It looks sort of unfinished

If anyone has dropped their cable or DirectTv and just used the Internet I would love to know how it worked out for you. I think we all would love to get hints on how to reduce our $100 plus a month cable cost. George

……There is a product called “DVD Shrink” that will rip DVDs to your hard drive, although some recent titles are broken up into too many files, and will give a read-error.

…..The biggest thing keeping me from cutting Charter Cable TV loose is a lack of ESPN programming on the web. I’ve GOT to be able to follow my team on TV! I used to be a CNN Headline News junkie, but now those guys are trying to be “National Enquirer TV.” Boo.

The truth is, using Boxee with your TV set is quite complicated and can have a steep learning curve. You can’t just “copy” a commercial DVD you already own onto your computer’s hard drive for future playback.

This solution as detailed in the Times article is most certainly not something for Grammy and Gramps, who are used to turning things on and switching channels with a single click of the remote.

Also, once Hulu goes to a paid-subscription model, as they have already announced, most of the TV shows that can be watched for free online will disappear behind a paywall.

So, you can either pay Comcast for your TV programs, or you can pay Hulu, Rupert Murdoch, Bill Gates and Netflix. But either way, you are going to pay.

That said, putting an antenna on your roof to capture the free over-the-air broadcast HD channels is an excellent idea.
