American Airlines Blanket Policy: Pay Up

What are you supposed to do with it afterwards?

It’s possible to imagine airport terminals cluttered with blue blankets. American Airlines will soon be charging chilly passengers for their blankets. For eight bucks they’ll sell you (no cash, plastic only) a blue blanket and pillow combo — and give you a coupon, too, from Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc.  You get to keep the blanket. They don’t want it back.

So you’ll have so many passengers arriving at the American terminal with a blanket to spare. Sure, maybe you can always use another blanket and $8 isn’t a fortune to spend for one but maybe you don’t want to lug around a blanket on a trip — looking like a little kid with his blankie in tow.

It’s just another way to nick and nibble away at the traveling public, the fees like fleas syndrome, air carrier style. JetBlue and US Airways already charge $7 for their blanket kits so American is joining a familiar trend. They don’t want the hassle of washing used blankets and say that this will ease pressure on the storage space. Plus they’ll make a profit on our need to be warm in the chilly planes.

Hopefully, having a blanket to carry on won’t trigger one of the new luggage fees. They’ll get us that way, too.
