Conn Will Increase Taxes, Will Reduce Services

No matter what lies or half-lies the two candidates for governor tell you, Connecticut taxpayers will be paying more and getting less. Its a fact of life, just like the laws of gravity.

George H. Bush was not the first presidential candidate  to give a “read my lips” speech when he knew full well that it was nonsense.

But politicians will tell us anything to get elected. Frankly its our fault for falling for it.

How many time have you heard politicians tell you that they will cut the waste out of government? How many actually did? How many times did you hear an elected official say the economy has changed, that is why taxes have to go up?

The reality is that nationally and in almost every state – with one exception of New Jersey (yes the state we Yankees make fun of) – have to START balancing budgets, cutting back on promised pension and health benefits to future retirees, and actually fund these health benefits that we have made a commitment for (so far Connecticut has yet to put a dime into a fund to pay the $24 billion health liability our politicians promised on our behalf).

Connecticut faces more than a $3 billion projected deficit in the next fiscal year.

According to today’s Courant, GOP candidate Tom Foley has ruled out a tax increase claiming that the budget hole can be filled with smart spending cuts. Foley is either a fool or Pinocchio.

The Demoratic nominee, Dannel Malloy, who is counting on state employees (read pensions and health benefits) to get elected says now that he would only consider a tax increase as a last resort. Malloy is either a fool or Pinocchio.

My suggestion is that you contact the established media in this state and demand that its reporters and editors start covering politics like it really mattered to its readers: in other words tell them you want your candidates actually grilled about their claims and have their feet held to the fire.

Tell the media that you are not interested in easy to write polls, or waste-of-time stories about mud slinging.

Folks, we get the government we deserve. I think we deserve better, but we have to fight for it.

his spokesman says, would consider tax increases only as a last resort – after first creating jobs, cutting state spending, and streamlining state government.

“The notion that you can get out of this without considering revenue – nobody believes that,” said Roy Occhiogrosso, Malloy’s chief strategist. “Dan believes in progressive taxation. It’s a basic difference between the two.”

Malloy has not made any specific proposals about raising taxes, other than to say that various options would need to be considered.
