The only downside of Martin Luther King Day is that two days in a row I have not received my Wall Street Journal.
So I pulled out from my pile a recent WSJ article I had save in its Personal Finance (my favorite) section about not very well known Internet discount shopping sites that are supposed to be by invitation only.
The column, written by Alina Dizik focuses on four sites – Â Gilt.com, RueLala.com, HauteLook.com, and Ideeli.com.
They sell brand names like Beirn handbags, Fendi sunglasses, Meghan Fabulous dresses, and Bellora towel sets (all but the Fendi I have never heard of) and you can get as much as 70 percent off of some items. The items change every day and you have to read the refund policies carefully.
Even though the four are supposed to be invitation only, Dizik said she was able to simply sign up at HauteLook and Ideeli. At Gilt she was put on a waiting list and got permission to join the next day. For Rue La La, she looked up “Rue La La membership” on Google and found a link that granted her permission to get on the site.
