Toyota Now Evaluating Prius Brake Issue

Toyota said today it is evaluating brake problems with the 2010 Prius gas-electric hybrid, but has not decided what to do about a recall, AP and CNN reported.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this morning that  it opened an investigation into the best-selling hybrid in this country after getting more than 100 complaints about the Prius brakes. The complaints said that antilock brakes can fail momentarily in slippery conditions or on rough roads.

Toyota – without notifying the public – made a change in the brake computer program in Priuses in production. Watch for more lawsuits.

Meanwhile, Ford said today it will upgrade the software on the brake systems on its Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrids after a braking issue was detected by Consumer Reports.

Upgrade applies to hybrids built before Oct. 17, an estimated 18,000 vehicles.

“We have received reports that some drivers have experienced a different brake feel when the hybrid’s unique regenerative brakes switch to conventional hydraulic braking,” Ford said in a statement Thursday. “While the vehicles maintain full braking capability, customers may initially perceive the condition as loss of brakes.”
