Every once in a while some media will write or talk about what great bargains are available at discount outlet stores.
I wish these journalists actually did their homework and compared prices at discount stores to sale prices at regular department stores or on Internet sites like Amazon and eBay.
What they would discover is that there are VERY FEW real bargains at the outlet malls.
When I was the business editor at The Courant, we actually went out and compared prices at the two outlet malls in the Clinton, Ct area to sales at department stores. Trust me, when you add the cost of travel, you had to search far and wide for bargains.
As you start your holiday shopping, here are some suggestions:
Start on the Internet for products. Amazon first because you also get to see the reviews, not only the prices. Then check eBay. Look for sellers with perfect or near perfect feedback on MANY items. Check TigerDirect, Crutchfield. Both outstanding.
Then consider joining a wholesale club like Costco, which I now own 100 shares.
If there is not a Costco within reach, try BJs or Sam’s Club.
Then check you Sunday newspaper ads.
Be a smart shopper.

I would say there are VERY FEW bargains at Costco/Sam’s Club. If you compare the price (even on a per ounce/item basis) to a sale at your local supermarket, especially combined with a coupon, the supermarket will win. Also, since you’re not buying a huge quantity, you have less risk of spoilage.
Thanks for your note. I have to disagree with you about Costo. I have done in-depth comparisons and have found – as did Consumer Reports – that there are HUGE bargains at Costco and their product guarantee is OUTSTANDING. I just brought back my wife’s one-month old computer which stopped working. Got my money back on the spot and they called the next day to ask if the return went ok.
