Stratford Condo Owner Threatened With Fine Unless Mezuzah Is Removed From Her Doorpost

“A condominium owner in Stratford has been told by her condo association that she must remove the mezuzah from her doorpost,” according to the Jewish Ledger.

“The California Condo Association has asked condo owner Barbara Cadranel to remove the mezuzah  — the small object placed on the doorpost of a Jewish family’s home in fulfillment of religious obligations  — and has threatened to fine her $50 a day for keeping it up.”

“According to its agreement with its condo owners, the California Condo Association does allow for the display of items such as Christmas wreaths and crosses on condo unit  doors, but does not allow for the display of items, such as mezuzot, on building structures such as doorposts. Now the Anti-Defamation League and a Washington, D.C. law office specializing in religious rights have gotten involved.”

According to Wikipedia other attempts have been made by condo associations to have mezuzah’s removed from doorways.

if hanging a mezuzah on your door frame is a “fufillment of religous obligations” why did this woman live in this condo for a full year before hanging this? did she take a year off from her faith?

It appears that the origin of the expression “dumb as a doorpost” has been discovered.

  3. I’m surprised to find this article on this site.
Full details include the facts that:
    1) the woman lived there for over a year before
    2) the mezuzah was given to her as a gift
If it was SUCH an important part of her religion, then why was she there a year without it and then only put it up when it was GIVEN to her.

  4. I would have loved that to happen to me, anyone who would have ordered me to take my ‘Mezuzah’ down would have landed up in hospital with all his teeth knocked out. I don’t care who they are. However that would be highly unlikely to have happened to me as thank G-d i live in a beautiful villa in Switzerland and have never encountered any trouble of the sort that the unfortunate lady has. Nobody would dare tell me to remove my Mezuzah, if they did I wouldn’t fancy his chances to ever stand on his legs ever again.
