Free Software Available at www.IRS.gov/FreeFile for Taxpayers Making $60,000 or Less; Basic E-Filing & Online Extensions Available to All Americans
With less than one month left until the tax deadline, the Free File Alliance, a nonprofit coalition of industry-leading tax software companies partnered with the IRS, today reminded taxpayers that free tax solutions are available to all at www.IRS.gov/FreeFile.
Free File offers two options to taxpayers depending on income level. Taxpayers with a 2014 Adjusted Gross Income of $60,000 or less can access free, industry-leading tax software to prepare, complete and e-file their federal tax returns at no cost. Taxpayers who have an AGI that exceeds $60,000 can e-file their federal tax returns or an extension using Free File Fillable Forms, a service designed for taxpayers who are familiar with tax law and need no preparation assistance.
Free File has also been updated for 2015 to help Americans navigate tax changes related to the Affordable Care Act. Forms 8962 and 8965 are available to all taxpayers.
“Free File offers free tax services to all taxpayers, providing a fast, safe and affordable option for anyone who still needs to file,” said Tim Hugo, executive director of the Free File Alliance. Taxpayers can use Free File to e-file their tax return or an extension at any time, day or night. Filing with Free File is one of the quickest ways to file your taxes and to receive your refund. Visit www.IRS.gov/freefile today to find the tax software option you need.”
More than 43 million returns have been filed through Free File since its inception, and taxpayers have consistently reported that it is user-friendly and efficient. Responding to a recent IRS survey, 96 percent of users said they found Free File easy to use, while 98 percent said they would recommend the program to others.
