Thinking about retirement in a sunny climate?
The good folks at the Wall Street Journal have put a lot of work into determining where its safer to buy or to rent by comparing average rental prices with sales prices.
Albuquerque: rent instead of buy, prices still likely to drop
Charlotte, N.C.: renting looks like a better deal for now
Greensville, S.C.: can’t go wrong either way
Las Vegas: oversupply of homes, rent for a while
Miami: you can rent safely for years
Orlando: close call
Phoenix: buying time
Sacramento: rent
San Diego: depends where in the city
Tampa/St. Petersburg: no question, rent
Obviously you want to do a lot more research before making a decision, but comparing the cost of rental with the cost of buying a house or a condo as well as comparing rental vacancy rates and housing inventory are critical pieces of the puzzle.
