SOUTHINGTON, CT – On Jan. 29, the International College of Dentists honored Dr. Jeremiah Lowney Jr., a practicing orthodontist in Norwich, with the 2010 District One Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Lowney was recognized for his philanthropic work in Haiti, having founded the Haitian Health Foundation in 1985.
“I’m honored to have received the distinguished service award,†said Dr. Lowney. “The situation in Haiti is one you cannot even begin to describe. People die from dental diseases – coming to me in lots of pain. I’m pleased the Haitian Health Foundation is able to help these people with not only extractions, but also restorative dentistry – as well as medical services and preventive care.â€
In honor of Dr. Lowney’s award, the Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) donated $5,000 to the Haitian Health Foundation. The Connecticut State Dental Foundation (CSDF) and the Connecticut Dental Political Action Committee (CODPAC) also recognized Dr. Lowney’s inspiring efforts by contributing $10,000 and $5,000, respectively, to the Haitian Health Foundation.
“This is a prestigious award and I was pleased to present it to Dr. Lowney,†said Dr. Bruce Tandy, president of the CSDA. “Not only is Dr. Lowney inspirational in his philanthropic work, but he is a respected member of the Connecticut dental community.â€
Dr. Lowney was recognized during a luncheon hosted by the International College of Dentists, which took place at Yankee Dental Congress in Boston.
Dr. Lowney’s interest in Haiti began with a trip to Port au Prince during which he provided free dental care to the poor. Following the experience, Dr. Lowney founded the Haitian Health Foundation, with the mission to “improve the health and well being of the poor, sick, and the infirm of the greater Jérémie area.†Over the past 28 years the foundation has grown tremendously, and today Dr. Lowney’s generosity and compassion for the people of Haiti has grown into an outpatient health care facility providing all types of health services and other everyday necessities to those living in the poorest, rural mountain villages of Haiti.
With the earthquake and aftershocks devastating Haiti, more Haitians than ever now need health care assistance. If you are interested in learning more about the Haitian Health Foundation and how you can help, visit www.haitianhealthfoundation.org.
