Stamford Animal Lovers Still Have Bone To Pick With Conn Humane Society

As reporters keep digging into the Connecticut Humane Society controversy, more dirt keeps coming up.

This week the Stamford Advocate wrote a large article revisiting broken promises made by Richard Johnston, president and chairman of the board of the Newington-based CHS.

Not only is the 20-year head of one of the oldest and best-known charities in Connecticut under investigation by the state attorney general’s office and OSHA, a lot of folks in Stamford say they are still angry over the way Johnston treated them.

Four years after Johnston, a former state senator, lawyer and real estate agent, took over the CHS, he tried to close its Stamford animal shelter.

The Stamford Advocate article says the attempt failed after residents protested by plan.

But four years later, in 1998, Johnston succeeded in selling the shelter and land to a developer.

At the time he promised to look for another site in Stamford, the article said, but instead he closed the Bethany shelter, leaving only the Westport shelter in Fairfield County.

The article said that volunteers who try to help animals are upset that the CHS, with more than $50 million in endowments, has left the area, leaving tiny nonprofits to care for all the animals.

“We have $617 in our account,” said Cathy Blacker, founder of Southern Connecticut Animal Trust, a tiny nonprofit that spays, neuters and rescues some of the hundreds of abandoned cats that live in colonies all over Stamford. “When that’s gone, the money comes out of my pocket, and I’m on Social Security,” the Stamford Advocate quoted her as saying.

With $50 mil of other peoples money in his pocket, this guy doesn’t sound very humane , or human, for that matter. Maybe it’s time for an audit?

or at the very least a time for an intervention to get him the heck out of there….Fresh blood, fresh ideas….fresh start…the ANIMALS deserve better.

My question is, was he the real estate broker for any of those sales? If so, that’s a conflict of interest, and he probably collected a commission too!!

So I hear the managers at CHS are still bullying staff, and acting abusively. Abusing their power…can’t wait to see what the AG unearths next!

Yea, the management at CHS think he’s going to wrap this up quickly, some of them have been quoted as saying that he’s just a “media hound”…gosh they are dumb…they should be more scared when they don’t see activity…means there is only a lot more going on behind the scenes!

    • Sad situation on May 14, 2010 at 7:34 am

They go around like they are never going to be punished or held responsible for their crimes. That’s totally laughable. What they don’t understand, is that just because they believe their lies, and live in this illusion that they are untouchable, the rest of the world sees right through them. No one backs them but each other, and OSHA, the NLRB, the AG, the media, their own staff, the public, etc all see right through the smoke screen.
It’s just a matter of time, wonder how they will feel when they loose their jobs!

Yup, and what about that horrible lying manager in Waterford? Just wait till she is exposed, get in the unemployment line honey. Hey it may be worse, how does she look in stripes?

What’s funny to me are the lies told to volunteers by the manager at newington and the lies Chris Whites tells to donors.
Can you believe it? I can’t wait till RB exposes their crazy lies.

  7. Where's Brady? on May 14, 2010 at 7:29 am

Is Brady up for adoption yet? I looked on their website but he isn’t listed.
I heard they are waiting for him to detiorate by being in the shelter for too long, not being avaiable for adoption, just so they can euth him.
    Criminals!
    When will the madness end?

He’s going to be put to sleep I’m sure. Joann and Karen corder have it out for him for no reason. They are sick.
Not to mention Karen the district manager has NO experience. Dick hired her cause he knew she was weak, fake, uniformed, and would do what ever he said. Looks like he was right.

Hey…CT Humane in Westport is now called the Westport Humane Society!!!!
Ha! Who do they think they are fooling? Do they really think the public is STUPID?
    I mean really!
You know what’s funny about that??? even they don’t want to be associated with themselves 🙂 that’s the funniest news yet!

I heard their donations are dropping. I feel bad for the animals. But the sad truth is that money does not go to the animals anyways. It goes to business with bod members and the lazy cfo’s salary.
I also heard they demoted that monster Joanne again. When are they finally going to fire her?
I know I don’t want my money going to that ladies salary. She kills all the dogs.
Thank goodness the attorney general is still after them!
