Consumers Should Avoid Using Halloween Flashlights Just Named in Recall
HARTFORD, October 27 – With Halloween just days away, consumers are being urged to take note of a new flashlight recall that is being issued for 610,000 novelty flashlights sold exclusively at Target stores from August through September 2009.
“If you’ve bought a Halloween flashlight in the last few months from Target, please have a look at these recalled items, and if you indeed have one of them, return it to the store for a full refund,†Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell said today. “These are being recalled because they are known to cause burns.â€Â Photos, next page.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Target, Inc. today announced a voluntary recall of well over half a million novelty Halloween-themed mini flashlights and flashlights sold with stencils that had been in stores in recent weeks.
Manufactured by DGI LLC, of Warren, N.J. and Tien Hsing, of Wanchai, Hong Kong, the recalled flashlights can overheat and melt, posing a burn hazard to consumers. Target has received eight reports of flashlights overheating and melting, including one report of burns to the hand.
The mini flashlights have a key ring extending from the bottom and were sold in a pack of three colors: orange, green and black. The orange and purple packaging has “Mini Flashlights (3 Pack)†printed on the front and “DGIâ€, “Made in China†and “DPCI# 234-02-1813†printed on the back. They sold for $1.00 per pack of three.
Also recalled are standard-sized flashlights with a black handle and an orange top. The flashlights were sold with six stencils in various colors and images: a pumpkin, ghost, spider, cat, witch and skull & cross-bones. “Flashlight with Stencil†is printed on the front and “Tien Hsing,†“Made in China†and â€234 02 1838†is printed on the back of the packaging. These sold for $2.50.
