American Joins the Air Fare Wars

American Airlines has joined Delta and AirTran in a terrific new sale, adding to the bargains available to travelers who buy tickets by August 24th.

The American sale, which has some restrictions, allows for travel through December 15th. As you might expect holidays are blacked out. Still, some of the bargains are flying from Hartford, say, to Jacksonville for $79, San Antonio for $94, New Orleans for $99 and many other good rates. The inevitable fees are extra, of course, but they’re on non-sale tickets, too.

Here’s‘s observation:

“It’s on! Not to be outdone by its rivals, American has officially raised the level of competition with another massive new offer that competes with AirTran’s and Delta’s newest promotions. The three carriers’ oversized sales collectively cover more than 4,000 routes and over 70 domestic destinations (AirTran’s promotion also offers Caribbean locales). AirTran’s and Delta’s fares start at $44 one-way or $88 round-trip, while American’s run from $138 round-trip.

“Beside the three sale providers, unannounced low fares from JetBlue, Frontier, United, and US Airways also compete with matching prices.

“Travel through mid-December, but book tickets by August 24. See the Fare Details … for specific travel dates and restrictions pertaining to your desired destination.”
