Continental Moves to Fly Cash-Free

Continental Airlines doesn’t want your money. Actually, it wants your money but it just doesn’t want your cash. The big airline has announced that it will no longer be accepting cash for drinks, headsets or other items ordered aboard the aircraft. They will, of course, take your debit or credit card instead.

The fifth largest airline in the country, Continental says it is spurning the cash “in response to feedback from customers and flight crews who expressed interest in using card readers for on-board purchases to eliminate the hassle of fumbling for money and making correct change.” One guesses that this helps the airline a lot more than it helps the consumer, who still has the hassle of fumbling for credit cards from the same wallets that the loathed cash comes from.

The new practice will be applied on most Continental flights, effective immediately, and will phase into the China routes once they figure out how to accept the Chinese system of credit cards. Continental is joining other majot carriers in the practice. Other lines that also fly plastic include AirTran, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, United, US Airways and Virgin America.
