-The Travel Bug
–
Hi. I’m Denis Horgan and I travel like crazy — but I don’t travel crazily. I “work” at doing it right, so that I can be free to change it on any whim.
In this ongoing Watchdog blog I’ll be sharing some thoughts and experiences and ideas on travel. How to do it. Where to go. Bargains. Tips and warnings. All this from one traveler to another.
I’d hope that we can exchange ideas as we go along. What works for me won’t always work for you. You are quite likely to have much better suggestions than mine. There’s no one perfect way to do travel – How boring would that be? But what I do offer is a tremendous amount of experience in traveling from here to there. I am off at the drop of a hat. Long international ventures; quick forays to some neighboring state. In recent years I have been all over the world — from the great cities of Europe to the snowy passes of the Himalayas in Tibet; from festivals in the Carolinas and New Orleans to the wilds of Alabama and Oregon. Jungles. Deserts. Cityscapes. I’ve done the wonderful and the mundane. Far and near. And I’ve enjoyed it all. Every single adventure has been interesting or exciting in its own way.
Seeing the Blue-Footed Boobies in the Galapagos or the ball fields of Omaha is so much the same thing: Fascinating.
Over time, you will hear a lot about how I travel and why, where I have been and where I’d like to go. And how to make it happen. For this to work best, I’d so much appreciate to hear the same from you.
Send me messages at dhorgan@ctwatchdog.com. Leave a comment at the end of an item. Share ideas. Ask questions.
Maybe I can help. I won’t book your trips but I can make suggestions that could do some good. I will be so eager to hear your tales and adventures, too.
There will be no magic in this — the magic of travel is in the destination usually not in the process. But a little bit here and little more later will hopefully add up to an evolving pattern that can assist us all in this great game of travel.
Denis will be off to Europe soon (Watchdog)

My only regret in life is that I did not start to travel sooner. Everyone should not only experience what our country has to offer, but to see our origins in other lands too.
I hope to see discussions on many subjects. In Europe, is it best to stay at a hotel or rent an apartment of villa? Public transportation or rent a car?
Will I be able to find my way around in Asia? The writing is so much different than our letters.
One tips I have for Europe. The best exchange rate is most often just taking money from the ATM. Most every aiport has one, as well as at local banks. The worst are often the booths at the airport.
Hi Ed,
Thanks for the message. Those are great subjects to discuss and we will go into them each in detail as time goes by.
I started traveling a lot when I was in my 20′s because I was overseas, courtesy of the Army. Then I didn’t travel much at all with all the kids and limited budgets etc. I’ve been back on the road in spades in recent years, and am making up for lost time.
That’s en excellent tip on the ATMS. Even with the fees, they are still better than most exchange services.
Let’s keep in touch
