This is my favorite time of the year in New England – September through December – when the air is cooler and cleaner, the leaves change and the best apples in the world are ready to be picked.

My daughter Jennifer and her husband Bobby introduced my wife and I this weekend to Sharon Springs, where the Harvest Festival was drawing hundreds of visitors to this small town on the way to  Cooperstown.

It was going to be a garlic festival, but at the last minute was changed to a Harvest Festival. There was enough garlic being sold at several booths, so it really didn’t matter. I had no idea that garlic could be hot enough to burn your mouth. And the change did not prevent the Discovery Channel from filming a show Saturday.

In the center of the Festival was the historic American Hotel, where friends of Jennifer and Bobby are throwing a huge party next weekend. The food, I hear is out of this world – locally grown – and the hotel is absolutely charming. www.americanhotelny.com

In case you don’t want to eat all your meals there, check out the Black Cat Cafe 015www.blackcat-ny.com across the street where I did taste the food and can attest is just wonderful. I had the curried chicken salad sandwich – its to die for.

Also met some interesting vendors and purchased samples from them, including tasty and healthy cereal fromMu Mu Muesli, www.mumumuesli.com.

If I had known what a great event this would be I would have tipped everyone else off about it. Next year I will give plenty of advance notice.
