Waits and his label, Anti, are letting fans have seven of the 17 songs to be released on the live CD of his 2008 tour. It was a brilliant show and I’ve been craving these songs since hearing them. This is the new way bands are marketing: give fans something they want  and encourage them to buy the rest. (Sort of what radio used to do in the days it was the main purveyor of new music.).
Waits is simply one of the most courageous and unusual artists we have today. I notice his music is crossing more into mainstream, getting picked up for commercials, such as this for dog food. There was nothing commercial about his live shows, which took me to places I’ve never been, like some cross between 1920s German cabaret and Dante’s “Inferno.”
Plenty of people won’t even want it for free….but those who do, will treasure his artistry.
Michael Jackson’s label has just done the same thing with his new single, “This is It,” which you can hear at that site.
Turns out the Jackson song isn’t exactly “new,” as his family claimed, but is a song he wrote with Paul Anka in 1983. It was recorded by the Sa-Fires previously. Nothing with MJ is ever as it seems.
