Meriden Ct Nursing Homes Fined For Poor Patient Care Issues

Written by Lisa Chedekel

Two Meriden nursing homes face fines from the state Department of Public Health for patient care lapses that in one case led to a resident’s hip fracture.

The DPH cited the Meriden Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on Paddock Avenue for an incident in July in which a nurse’s aide improperly moved a resident using a Hoyer lift. The resident fell backwards when a pad slipped out of a hook on the lift and was taken to the hospital complaining of hip and leg pain, the DPH report says. The patient was diagnosed with a fracture of the femoral neck, a bone just below the hip joint.

The nursing home was fined $250 for failing to abide by facility policy, which requires that two staff members are present for Hoyer lift transfers of patients.

Another Meriden nursing home, Silver Springs Care Center on Roy Street, faces a $650 fine for failing to properly screen and treat a resident who had pronounced problems with range of motion. A DPH report says the resident’s hands, elbows and leg were contracted, but no therapy was being provided. Nursing home staff said they normally monitor and refer residents who need physical or occupational therapy.

A third nursing home, in Rockville, also was cited recently by DPH for an incident in which a resident was injured. Fox Hill Center in Rockville faces a $510 fine for failing to properly supervise a resident with dementia who fractured her arm when she fell in a bathroom in June.
