Craigslist Confirms Shutting Down Hooker Section, But Warns Of Consequences

Under pressure from state Attorneys General, Craigslist Wednesday confirmed that it has permanently shut down its “adult services” section.

However, a company spokesman defended the site’s activities as “one of the few bright spots” in the fight against child trafficking, PC Magazine’s website reported.

“As of September 3, 2010 Craigslist has terminated its adult services section,” William Clinton Powell, director of customer service and law enforcement relations at Craigslist, said during a child trafficking hearing before the House Judiciary Committee, PC said.

“Those who formerly posted adult services ads on Craigslist will now advertise at countless other venues,” he continued. “It is our sincere hope that law enforcement and advocacy groups will find helpful partners there.”

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, campaigning for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by fellow Democrat Chris Dodd, hailed the decision.

“I am pleased that craigslist has finally confirmed its shutdown of adult services. We will continue seeking from craigslist more effective and aggressive screening to fight prostitution ads, including swift removal of suspect ads flagged by the public.

“We hope from craigslist continued cooperation in preventing sexual exploitation of children and human trafficking connected to prostitution,” he said in a prepared statement.
